Theta EdgeCloud, a cutting-edge decentralized software platform that is poised to revolutionize the edge computing market, was recently unveiled by Theta Labs. The platform's goal is to provide developers, businesses, and researchers with unmatched access to GPU processing power at the best possible prices for a variety of AI and video processing applications. Using the Theta Edge Network as its power source, this novel method combines the greatest aspects of cloud computing with a decentralized system.
What is the Theta EdgeCloud
The core AI computing infrastructure of Theta EdgeCloud has undergone significant refining, and it is the result of years of development. Theta Edge Network was first centered on GPU-intensive video processing tasks when it debuted with Mainnet 3.0 in 2021. Currently, it has about 10,000 active edge nodes run by community members, making it one of the world's largest clusters of distributed GPU processing capacity.
An Advancement in Distributed GPU Processing
These nodes have incredible computing power. GPUs with high performance yield 36,392 TFLOPS, GPUs with medium performance yield 28,145 TFLOPS, while poor performance GPUs yield an extra 13,002 TFLOPS. This is equivalent to a total of about 80 PetaFLOPS, or 77,538 TFLOPS, which is equivalent to 250 NVIDIA A100s. Theta's access to over 800 PetaFLOPS, when paired with strategic cloud partners, can give capability comparable to 2500 NVIDIA A100s, enough to train some of the most sophisticated language models available.
Theta's inventiveness extends beyond its hardware. Theta applied for a patent in 2021 for a “Edge Computing Platform supported by Smart Contract enabled blockchain network,” and in September of 2023 the invention was awarded. This invention paved the way for a hybrid computing architecture in which nodes that participate in the computation process receive token rewards once compute tasks are registered on a blockchain, securely assigned to edge nodes, and confirmed by smart contracts.
Partnerships and Collaborations
Theta's approach has always been based on collaboration. Theta has been at the forefront of creating AI solutions through collaborations with AI-focused organizations like Lavita.AI, FedML, and Google Cloud. One of their innovations is a pipeline for video-to-text applications that are used in esports highlight production and semantic video search.
What is the future of the Theta EdgeCloud
Theta anticipates releasing EdgeCloud's first phase on May 1st 2024, and as part of that release, the platform will provide a library of unconventional AI models, including Llama 2 and stable diffusion. With the second version of Spring-Summer, node operators that engage in AI compute tasks will receive rewards thanks to the Elite+ Booster function for enhanced node software. Next, highly skilled AI engineers will be able to oversee the whole development process of their AI pipeline, from prototype to implementation on Theta's vast GPU network.
Theta's foray into this field highlights the potential of blockchain technology to spur innovation in AI computing and marks a significant advancement in the democratization of AI and computing resources.
